What Is IGCSE Math 0580?
IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is the Cambridge International GCSE qualification for mathematics. It's designed for students aged 14–16 and is recognized by universities and employers worldwide. In Singapore, it's offered primarily by international schools.
For a comparison with O-Level, see IGCSE vs O-Level Math.
Core vs Extended
| Feature | Core (0580/01) | Extended (0580/02) |
|---|---|---|
| Grade range | C–G | A*–C |
| Content depth | Foundational | Full syllabus + extensions |
| Calculus | Not included | Differentiation and basic integration |
| Target student | Needs a pass | Aiming for top grades |
Important: Students must be entered for either Core or Extended before the exam. This decision should be made based on the student's current level and target grade, ideally in consultation with their teacher.
See IGCSE Grade Boundaries for typical grade cutoffs.
Topic Breakdown
| Topic | Weightage | Core Topics | Extended Additions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Number | ~20% | Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio | Standard form, bounds of accuracy |
| Algebra | ~25% | Equations, inequalities, sequences | Simultaneous equations, factorization |
| Geometry | ~15% | Angles, polygons, symmetry | Circle theorems, vectors |
| Mensuration | ~15% | Area, volume, surface area | Compound measures |
| Statistics | ~15% | Averages, charts, probability | Cumulative frequency, histograms |
| Trigonometry | ~10% | Basic trig (SOH CAH TOA) | Sine/cosine rules, 3D trig |
See the detailed topic pages: Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics.
Exam Structure
Core (Papers 1 and 3)
- ▸Paper 1: 1 hour 30 min, 40 marks, calculator not allowed
- ▸Paper 3: 2 hours, 60 marks, calculator allowed
Extended (Papers 2 and 4)

- ▸Paper 4: 2 hours 30 min, 100 marks, calculator allowed
Total marks determine the final grade. The grade boundaries shift slightly each year — see IGCSE Grade Boundaries for recent trends.
Revision Strategy
| Weeks Before Exam | Focus |
|---|---|
| 12+ weeks | Topic-by-topic revision. Use the IGCSE revision hub. |
| 8 weeks | Practice papers under timed conditions. |
| 4 weeks | Review mistakes. Focus on recurring error patterns. |
| Final 2 weeks | Formula revision. Light practice only. |
See IGCSE Past Papers for practice materials.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ▸Not checking Core vs Extended entry. Students entered for Core cannot achieve above a C, even with perfect marks.
- ▸Ignoring the non-calculator paper. Paper 12 requires mental arithmetic and algebraic manipulation without a calculator. Practice this separately.
- ▸Leaving blank answers. There's no penalty for wrong answers — always write something. Method marks add up.
- ▸Not reading the command words. "Calculate" means show working. "State" means a brief answer. "Explain" means give reasons.
