IGCSE vs O-Level
Same level, different pathways. What actually differs between the two, and how to choose without relying on myths about difficulty.
| Aspect | IGCSE | O-Level |
|---|---|---|
| Awarding context | Cambridge international curriculum used worldwide | Cambridge GCE O-Level, including the Singapore MOE pathway |
| Typical students | International and private schools abroad and in Singapore | Government and some local schools following national syllabi |
| Grading | 0580 letter grades A*βG or 9β1 on 0980 and Edexcel 4MA1 | Subject to the offering board; commonly A1βF9 or A*βC bands |
| Tiering in maths | Core / Extended (Cambridge) and Foundation / Higher (Edexcel) | E-Math and A-Math split by subject in the MOE pathway |
| Downstream paths | A-Level, IB, or national senior secondary routes | JC, polytechnic or IP continuation in Singapore |
| Recognition | Accepted internationally as a pre-16 qualification | Accepted internationally as a pre-16 qualification |
The honest answer
Choose by pathway
The qualification follows the school system, not the other way round. A student in a Singapore government school takes the MOE O-Level route; a student in an international school takes IGCSE. Fighting that alignment creates transfer problems later, not advantages.
Ignore the difficulty myth
Neither qualification is officially harder, and both lead to the same next level. Difficulty comes from tier or subject entry and from how well the teaching matches the syllabus. Compare syllabus documents, not reputations.
What stays the same
The maths overlaps heavily: number, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability appear in both. A student strong in ratios, equations and graph work is well prepared for either. The differences are structural, such as paper timing, calculator rules and how the tier is drawn.
Families on the MOE path will find our free O-Level math practice covers that overlap directly, and the topic guides in the IGCSE hub map the international side.
